Venice to Chioggia Cruise Port: DIY Transfers Guide

Need to go from Venice to Chioggia Cruise Port to board your cruise ship? Chioggia Cruise Port is an embarkation port for Azamara Cruises & Viking Cruises and for some river cruise lines. Let me show you how to travel from Venice to Chioggia Cruise Port in under an hour, using an air-conditioned coach service!

2025 Update: Both Azamara Cruises & Viking Ocean Cruises have moved their embarkation ports from Chioggia Cruise Port to the Venice Fusina terminal. (As far as I know, not all cruises in 2025 season have been moved but some have, so be sure to check the specifics for your cruise! I wrote this blog post in 2024!)

Venice Fusina is a (car) ferry terminal and unfortunately, a DIY transfer option is not possible. The vaporetto (water bus) from Venice stops at approximately 2 miles (~ 3.2km) from the Fusina terminal – there’s no taxis there, so don’t consider this as an option. I also don’t think that a private water taxi can stop near the Fusina terminal either, as it’s in an industrial area – truly in the middle of nowhere!

If your cruise is departing from Venice Fusina Terminal, I would recommend that you use your cruise line’s official transfer service.

Venice to Chioggia Cruise Port: Is a DIY Transfer Easy? 😎😎😎😎 Straightforward

I did this DIY transfer in July 2024 to join my cruise onboard the Azamara Pursuit. I rated my DIY transfer as 😎😎😎😎 Straightforward because:

  • Direct Coach Service (Bus #80) from Venice Piazzale Roma: Piazzale Roma is the central transport hub, 3 minutes walk from Venice Santa Lucia Station. There’s usually a coach service running every 15-30 minutes.
  • 5 minutes walk to Chioggia Cruise Port: Coach dropped me off about 5 minutes walk from the port gates at Chioggia Cruise Port. The walk was on flat ground at least 90% of the way.
  • Sit in air-conditioned comfort: I was surprised when a double-decker coach pulled up in front of the stop! This “bus” is in fact a coach service for locals visiting the beaches at Sottomarina near Chioggia town centre.

Please note that there are no dedicated luggage racks on the coach that I travelled on. I brought my check-in bag with me onboard the coach (not a problem). Smaller check-in bags and carry-on bags will fit underneath seats. I put my larger check-in bag in between seats but this means it was easier for me to stay on the lower deck of the coach, rather than drag my suitcase up the stairs to the upper deck.

Venice to Chioggia Cruise Port: Your Transfer Options

There’s a few ways to get from Venice to Chioggia Cruise Port, so I’ll cover your options below. All the landmarks, such as bus stops, are marked in my Venice to Chioggia Cruise Port Transfers Map above 🗺️📌👆. If you’re traveling directly from Venice Airport to Chioggia Cruise Port, then jump straight to the relevant section for you below by clicking here.

1. Bus #80 from Venice Piazzale Roma

PeopleMover station entrance at Venice Piazzale Roma
Use PeopleMover station at Piazzale Roma as landmark to find Bus #80 stop

Bus #80 is run by Arriva Veneto, not the other two bus companies operating in Venice & Venice Airport area (ACTV and ATVO).

  • Departure Bus Stop at Piazzale Roma: Bus #80 leaves from the bus stop opposite from the People Mover entrance. It’s a big white building 👆, which turned out to be a parking garage! I’ve marked this in the Venice to Chioggia Cruise Port Transfers Map above 🗺️📌👆
  • Frequency: During summer months, typically every 30 minutes. During peak hours, it runs every 15 minutes.
  • Timetables: Link to Arriva Veneto bus timetables; if you’re planning ahead, note that winter services are less frequent than during the summer. Alternatively, click on Piazzale Roma bus stop on Google Maps, scroll down. On a mobile, you should see departure times. On a laptop or tablet, you may need to click on “Departure Boards” button. I’ve found the timetables on Google Maps to be accurate and easier to access on the go, on my mobile.
  • Journey Time: Around an hour, depending on traffic. I travelled at 10am on a weekday and there was virtually no traffic to Chioggia.
  • Tickets: €10 cash per person if purchased from driver (no cards accepted onboard), €6.90 per person if ticket purchased online before hand. (This route requires a 9 zone ticket). I downloaded the app and purchased a ticket online.
  • Where to Get Off: “Chioggia Via Naccari” – it’s easiest to tell the bus driver where you’re going. From the bus stop, the walk to Chioggia Cruise Port is marked on my map – or see more details below.
    • For landmarks, the bus drives on a very long bridge called “Ponte Translagunate” into Chioggia before getting off the highway. It then passes Chioggia train station on your right. The next stop is Chioggia Via Naccari.
  • Why I did this DIY Transfer: Based on where my Venice hotel was, this DIY transfer from Piazzale Roma was easiest. Almost point-to-point, although I did have a 5 minute walk to Chioggia Pier. Note that there is a port shuttle that runs from the port gate to baggage drop off at Chioggia cruise terminal. So no need to drag your luggage for another 5 minutes walk from port gates to the cruise terminal unless you want to.

How to Get to Piazzale Roma from Venice Hotels

Vaporetto Jetty at Venice Piazzale Roma
Vaporetto Jetty at Piazzale Roma

There’s a water bus (ACTV Vaporetto) stop directly opposite Piazzale Roma where the buses depart from. Water Bus (Vaporetto) routes #1, #2, #3, #4.1, #4.2, #5.1 and #5.2 stop at Piazzale Roma. Avoid catching #1 if possible as it’s one of the slowest and busiest routes. If you’re not sure, ask at your hotel for the best way to get to Piazzale Roma.

How to Walk from “Chioggia Via Naccari” Bus Stop to Chioggia Cruise Terminal

See the walking route marked in blue in my Venice to Chioggia Cruise Port Transfers Map above. As soon as you get off the X80 bus, you’ll see the waterfront. Walk towards the waterfront and make a right. You’ll immediately see a bridge – two car lanes and pedestrian walkways on either side of the bridge. Cross the bridge and keep walking straight.

It took me about 7-8 minutes, rolling along my check-in bag on a snail pace, as I arrived an hour early before my scheduled embarkation time. The walking route is almost entirely on flat ground, except for maybe 10-15 steps on a small incline as I cross the bridge.

At the port gates, your documentation will be checked by the guard. Ask the guard whether there’s a shuttle – you may save a further few minutes’ walk to the cruise terminal for luggage drop off if there’s one. (I rode the shuttle and staff helped me with my luggage.)

2. Cruise Line Transfers from Tronchetto People Mover

If you’re reading this blog post, the chances are you’re traveling with Azamara Cruises, as Chioggia Cruise Port is rarely used by other cruise lines, except for river cruise lines. You’ll need to pre-book your transfers with your cruise line. According to some fellow cruisers, this transfer did sell out on my cruise. (Once two coaches sold out, I didn’t think a third coach was planned.).

  • Shuttle Departure Point: Most cruise lines’ transfer shuttles pick up passengers from outside the PeopleMover stop at Tronchetto. This is because it’s the closest spot in Venice where large motor coaches have space to park and wait for pickup.
    • Note there is virtually no shade at the shuttle departure point. So do bring a hat and sunscreen in your hand luggage that’s easily accessible! (On my cruise, some cruisers were left waiting for over an hour at Tronchetto, as the coaches were running late.)
  • Get to PeopleMover Tronchetto stop: Hop onto the PeopleMover at Piazzale Roma and get off at Tronchetto (final stop). The PeopleMover at Piazzale Roma is just a minute’s walk from the vaporetto jetties.
  • PeopleMover tickets: €1.50 one-way.
    • Pay By Contactless: From July 2024, you can pay by contactless cards (Visa, MC, Amex & ApplePay, GooglePay) – just tap and enter the gates. There hasn’t been much publicity about the gradual enabling of contactless payments on Venice public transport (including vaporettos) but it was working on buses, vaporettos and the PeopleMover when I visited in July 2024. What isn’t working yet is the cap of €25 per 24 hours on vaporettos. If you plan to tour Venice and take many vaporettos, it’s still cheaper to buy a €25 daily pass rather than pay €9.50 per trip using contactless cards.
  • Journey Time: PeopleMover ride only takes a few minutes. Coach transfer ride takes about an hour from Venice to Chioggia Cruise Port.

If you are traveling with Azamara, be sure to check your final cruise documentation for your embarkation port in Venice! My cruise (and at least the one before mine as well) used Chioggia Cruise Port as the embarkation point but the later ones used the “old” cruise terminal in Venice itself. So the embarkation port in “Venice” is fluid and subject to change depending on availability.

3. Private Water Taxi

From your Venice hotel, you can take a private water taxi all the way to Chioggia but it is quite expensive. It also takes way over an hour. I was quoted rates between €250 to €300 one-way. Be sure that the water taxi will drop you off at the cruise terminal itself and not at the Chioggia ferry terminal, which is quite some way away!

4. Private Transfers by Car

A private transfer by car, from Piazzale Roma, isn’t that much cheaper either! I was quoted over €300 but if you’re a larger group which can fill a private van, then it may work out cheaper on a per person basis.

Venice Airport (VCE) to Chioggia Cruise Port: Your Transport Options

If you’re travelling directly from Venice Airport (VCE) to Chioggia Cruise Port for embarkation, you can also take a bus transfer at VCE to Chioggia or take a bus from Venice Airport to Piazzale Roma, to catch the People Mover for the cruise line transfer at Tronchetto. You can also catch a private water taxi or land taxi to Chioggia but I won’t cover these in detail here.

1. Bus #85 from Venice Airport (VCE) to Chioggia

VCE Arrivals Hall – left for buses, right for water buses

Bus #85 is also run by Arriva Veneto and not by the other two companies running services to Venice (ACTV and ATVO).

  • Departure Bus Stop at Venice Airport (VCE): Bus #85 leaves from the bus stop just outside the Arrivals Hall. Be sure to look for an “Arriva” sign and not jump onto the ACTV and ATVO airport transfer coaches heading to Venice and Mestre!
  • Frequency: During summer months, typically every hour.
  • Timetables: Link to Arriva Veneto bus timetables; if you’re planning ahead, note that winter services are less frequent than during the summer.
  • Journey Time: 1.5 hours, depending on traffic.
  • Tickets: €14 cash per person if purchased from driver (no cards accepted onboard), €10 per person if ticket purchased online before hand. You can download the app and purchase online.
  • Where to Get Off: “Chioggia Via Naccari” – it’s easier to tell the driver where you’re going. From the bus stop, the walk to Chioggia Cruise Port is about 5 minutes walk on flat ground.
    • For landmarks, the bus drives on a very long bridge called “Ponte Translagunate” into Chioggia before getting off the highway. It then passes Chioggia train station on your right. The next stop is Chioggia Via Naccari.

2. Cruise Line Transfers from Tronchetto People Mover

From Venice Airport (VCE), you can catch a bus or a waterbus (besides taxi or private transfer) to get to Venice Piazzale Roma. From Piazzale Roma, you can catch the PeopleMover to Tronchetto for the cruise transfer coach pickup.

Bus and Alilaguna ticket machines at Venice Airport Arrivals Luggage Hall
Bus / Alilaguna Tickets at Venice Airport Arrivals Luggage Hall
  • ACTV AeroBus (Bus #5): Follow signs in Arrivals Hall – see photo above 👆 – to bus stop.
    • Tickets: €10 adults one-way. Be sure to get your tickets from an ACTV ticket machine or the ticket seller at the ACTV bus stop. ATVO coaches (a different company with services to Venice Mestre) are nearby and the tickets between the two companies are not interchangeable. If you buy the ticket from a machine, don’t forget to validate it when you board the bus! (You can see the ACTV ticket machine being next to the ATVO machine – yes, confusing indeed!). All the ticket machines take card and contactless payments.
    • Frequency: Every 15 minutes during weekdays and every 20 minutes during weekends.
    • Timetables: ACTV AeroBus timetables here
    • Journey Time: Around 20 minutes.
  • Alilaguna (Water Bus) Transfer – Blue Line: Follow signs in Arrivals Hall – see photo above 👆 – to Alilaguna departure jetty
    • Tickets: €15 adults one-way.
    • Timetables: Download timetables here.
    • Frequency: Blue Line Alilaguna runs approximately hourly
    • Journey Time: Takes about 90 minutes from Venice Airport to its final stop at Terminal Crociere. The bus is a lot faster but not quite as scenic!
    • Get Off at Second Last Stop: The Alilaguna Blue Line’s second last stop is at “Terminal Crociere Cruise Terminal”. You’ll see signs to the PeopleMover “Station Di Marittima” station. Jump onto the PeopleMover for one stop to Tronchetto. You can also catch the Alilaguna to the final stop at Ferrova, just outside Venice Santa Lucia train station but there’s a longer walk to Piazzale Roma and the PeopleMover station there.

  1. Viking is using the Chioggia port for my cruise. I don’t have a viking transfer. It looks like the 85 bus is a great option that gets to the Chioggia bus terminal. But then I need to get to the boat, which looks like 1mi walk over a causeway on road w no sidewalk with luggage? Is this accurate?

    • Hi Scott, good to know that Chioggia is still being used by other cruise lines, as I think logistically, Chioggia is the best port to sail out of in the Venice region. If you’re intending to catch the #85 bus, the best stop to get off for Chioggia Cruise Port is in fact “Chioggia Via Naccari”, not the Chioggia bus terminal – more details in my post – look for “Where to Get Off”. As for the walk from “Chioggia Via Naccari” bus stop, it’s about a 5-10 minute walk with sidewalks, all the way until about 1 minute before the port gates. For more details about what the walk was like for me, read the section above called “How to Walk from Chioggia Via Naccari” bus stop to Chioggia Cruise Port Terminal. Hope you’ll enjoy your cruise!

  2. Thank you for all of the information on Venice to Chioggia Cruise Terminal. I like to utilize public transportation and am not afraid of a challenge. The Bus (from Piazelle Roma) route #80 timetable doesn’t seem to be available to download. How was the walk from the last stop? There’s just 2 of us traveling, so a private transfer was pretty pricey – this seems like a great option. Any other suggestions are welcome!

    • Hi Gordon, the walk to the port was better & easier than I anticipated. On Google Maps, it looked like a bad walk, because one had to cross a small bridge. But I did do the walk virtually using StreetView before I attempted it on my trip!

The walk is about 5-10 minutes and provided you’re okay with rolling your luggage, I think it’s not a bad walk, as it’s mostly on flat ground. (It’s not an easy walk, as I had to roll along a check-in bag with me!). Towards the end close to the port gates, only one side of the road had pavements, so I had to cross the road. Many cruisers on my cruise did the walk, as they stayed overnight in Chioggia, and all were fine. I was so surprised to see so many people walking on this route! Be sure to catch the port shuttle once through the port gates, as it will save you another 5 minutes walk from the gate to the terminal itself where you drop off your luggage.

I had issues with download the timetable too. There’s a second link on my post, right after the timetables, linking to the actual bus stop on Google Maps. Click it and f you scroll down, you’ll see a departure boards button on desktop. The timetable on display on Google Maps I found was accurate. (On a mobile, the departure times should just show). It’s basically every 30 minutes.

Hope this helps. Have a most wonderful trip!
